ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATIONS

    

The Study centre celebrated environment day with diverse activities. Renowned activist Dr. M.K. Prasad delivered the keynote address. He warned about the present environmental issues and human influence on nature. He also explained about the significance of Environment day.  Dr. Francis Cyriac E., Principal, presided over the function. Sri. Mons Joseph MLA presented the Paristhithi Mithra award of CEERD. Sri. George Kulangara made a speech after receiving the plastics collected by the study centre. Sri. P.L. Abraham, President, Uzhavoor Grama Panchayath has felicitated on the occation. Dr. Mercy Philip welcomed the gathering and Sri. Jais Kurian extended the vote of thanks.

‘KANADAM’-INTER-SCHOOL SCIENCE CAMP

     

An inter-school camp named ‘Kanadam’ was organized by the Study Centre in association with Effective Teacher (an educational organization based in kottayam), on 25^th and 26^th May 2011 in Amos Centre, Kottayam. The camp was focused on science education. Since 2011 is observed as the International year of chemistry, the camp was named after the famous Indian scientist Kanadan.  Dr. V.S. Jose inaugurated the camp. Sri K.C. Baby kutty presided over the function. Sri. K.S. Binuraj and G. Sunil felicitated on the occation.

First session of the camp was handled by Dr. Suresh Mathew, School of Chemical Science, M.G. University, Kottayam. His presentation was on Chemistry Year and future of chemistry. Next session was on Polymer chemistry which was led by V.G. Jyothi, Faculty member, Effective teacher. Sri. Babykkutty, headmaster, Labour India Public School handled a session on the topic Chemistry in day to day life. Remaining sessions were led by Sri. N.D.Sivan, Sri. K. Binu, Sri. Joseph Mathew and Sri. T. Gopalakrishnan.

On 26^th May, the participants visited Lab of the School of Chemical Science, M.G. University. Faculties as well as research scholars of the department accompanied the students to introduce the lab equipments and experiments. The concluding session of the camp was inaugurated by Dr. Rajan Gurukkal, Vice-Chancellor, M.G. University. He gave an inspiring lecture to the students about science and scientific thinking. About 35 students took the benefit of the camp.



PLASTIC CAMPAIGN

     Since plastic is considered as one of the important environmental hazards, the study centre has done an awareness campaign in Uzhavoor Grama Panchayath. Notices describing the ill effects of plastic were distributed to all houses as a part of the awareness creation. As a creative move to tackle this environmental issue, a plastic collection programme has also been done with the assistance of Kudumbasree. A truck full plastic was collected from Uzhavoor panchayath. The collected materials were transferred to World Malayalee Council since they have a project for recycling. Sri. George Kulangara, Chairman, World Malayalee Council-India Region, received the plastics in a function on Environment day.

Inter- Collegiate Camp for Dalit Students

We are glad to inform you that the UGC sponsored K. R. Narayanan Study Centre is organizing an Inter- Collegiate Camp for dalit students on 19^th and 20^th February 2011 in Amos Centre, Kottayam. This camp is organized for the multi-dimensional development of dalit students in colleges and to equip them to build a good career in the present competitive world. Experienced trainers will handle the each session. The focus areas of the camp are

§  Career Development

§  Personality and Soft-skill Development

§  Awareness on courses and scholarships for higher education

§  Reservation and Job opportunities for Dalits

§  Introduction to Special Rights of SCs and STs

§  Interaction with famous Dalit Personalities

§  Leadership Development

       Interested dalit students can participate in the camp and there is no registration fee. Food and accommodation facilities are arranged in Amos Centre, Kottayam. Only 50 students will be admitted in the camp and that will be strictly on first come first basis. A maximum of 5 students from a college will be admitted in camp. The registration can be done through e-mail or telephone call. But the filled entries should reach the K. R. Narayanan Study Centre on or before 17^th February 2011 to confirm the registration. Talk on 'Kashmir: Conflicts and Resolutions'

The centre has organized a talk on the topic ‘Kashmir: Conflicts and resolutions’ on 04.01.2011 at 11.45 a.m. in the Chazhikkatt Hall. The talk was delivered by Dr. Mathew Joseph C., Reader, Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi. Dr. Mathew is one of the best resource person on the topic because he actively engaged in discussions related to the issues.

He presented the history of Kashmir from the Amruthsar agreement signed on 1846. He elaborated the role of independence movement of Kashmir in India’s freedom struggle. Dr. Mathew described the important incidents in the chronological order which helped the audience to understand it well.

According to Dr. Mathew Joseph, the Kashmir conflict is an irresolvable conflict. The people of Kashmir are now makes calamities as a result of denying justice to them in past decades. Indian government is responsible for that. The Kashmir people are now under the shadow of doubt. They were suppressed. The people are facing a lot of problems. Most of them need psychological assistances especially children. As an expert in this topic, he suggested giving self rule to Kashmir and the present rules should be done practically. Dr. Mercy Philip welcomed the gathering and Dr. Jose V.S. expressed vote of thanks. The Principal Dr. Francis Cyriac, teachers and all students attended the talk and participated in the discussions.
